Novel COVID-19 Vaccine Initiative

COVID-19 Research Area(s): Diagnostics, Genomics & Transmission Dynamics, Vaccines & Treatments

This University of British Columbia COVID-19 vaccine initiative is in response to the urgent societal need to create an effective vaccine in order to accelerate containment of the pandemic.

In the absence of an effective COVID-19 vaccine, the world is now facing a pandemic. In order to address this global problem, Professor Wilf Jefferies and his team are designing, creating and testing high-performance vaccines for the COVID-19 virus. These next-generation vaccines are engineered to boost the immune response to produce more antibodies and longer-lasting immunity. Funded by the Michael Smith Health Research Foundation, these advanced vaccine technologies have the potential to overcome a major obstacle in vaccine development for global populations by reducing the dosage of vaccine required for complete protection, thereby reducing costs and manufacturing time, and ultimately, saving lives. If these vaccines are successful, they will be produced at a reasonable cost, and with acceptable shelf-life and then mass distributed.
