Self-Disinfecting TiO2 Coating to Enable Antibacterial, Antiviral and Reusable Facemasks (COVID-19)

COVID-19 Research Area(s): Equipment & Technology Innovations

Dr. Jian Liu’s team at UBC aims at developing self-disinfecting and reusable consumer-grade facemasks that are suitable for everyday use by the public. The team will develop and implement an antimicrobial copper coating solution on Myant’s fabric facemasks to achieve antibacterial and antiviral properties. This project will deliver low-cost, antimicrobial, and reusable facemasks to the public, thus helping protect and care for those most at risk in our society. More importantly, the developed antimicrobial copper coating can also be used on other personal protective equipment (PPE), such as face shields, goggles, and gowns, for frontline healthcare providers. The team will share the coating solution to other PPE manufacturers in Canada and worldwide.
